1997: Gerda Lampalzer & Manfred Oppermann
For 1997 we invited the artist couple Gerda Lampalzer & Manfred Oppermann from Vienna. During their residency they created an in situ installation inspired by two optical experiments reported in the German science magazine: Spektrum der Wissenschaft. Taking photographs through an ice lens and measuring the visual disturbance inherent in binocular vision, the artists created film-strip narratives documenting their own pseudo-scientific research. Two strips of 35 mm slide film, each four meters long, were carefully mounted in specifically constructed iron and optical viewing apparatuses. Viewers "read" the stories from beginning to end with magnifying lenses mounted on sliding tracks.
